The trapped CEO phenomenon (and how to escape it)

Business is about choices.

And whatever is plaguing you in your business right now:

  • you’ve lost momentum
  • energy has disappeared
  • you’re at a crossroads
  • it’s just not as fun as it used to be
  • you feel trapped

And however intense or difficult it may feel…

The solution is waiting for you on the other end of a choice.

The choice just needs to be seen and made.

Now here’s what’s interesting:

The bigger the business, the harder your choices feel.

This is because every change you make has so many knock-on effects:

“I know I have to fix XYZ, but that will cause so many other problems…”

Complexity in the business makes choices harder.

And the easiest thing is to do nothing.

This creates inertia.

Momentum evaporates.

And this is how successful business owners end up feeling “trapped” in their business.

The irony is, it’s precisely these business owners who have the resources to make things happen — money and team.

But all that’s happening is

They’ve stopped making choices.

What I try to do in this situation is help the entrepreneur clearly see the choices available to them:

  • what the options are
  • the impact they will have
  • the potential fallout

…and then, with everything clearly in sight, what move makes most sense?

It’s very difficult to see these choices clearly when you’re working inside the business.

But the choices are usually quite simple.

Especially for larger businesses, where there are only so many levers available to you:

  • creating a new product range to satisfy an unmet demand within your audience
  • exploiting unused capabilities within your team
  • reducing head count and streamlining operations to create profitability
  • …or increasing headcount in order to free up your time
  • investing into new traffic sources to stimulate leads
  • developing strategic relationships to expand the business
  • restructuring offers and pricing to create higher LTV

For a larger business, the choices have to be big — big choices are the only way to get a big enough impact.

But bigger choices will have knock-on effects:

A new product ranges will increase complexity in the business. (You may not have the energy for that.)

Streamlining operations will create profit. (But it won’t create immediate growth.)

Paid traffic will explode your leads. (But can you stomach the financial turbulence?)

The art in all this is to be able to step back far enough…

Get enough distance…

To be able to look at the business from 30,000 ft and see everything clearly.

When you see clearly, the choices emerge.

But make no mistake…

However trapped you may feel…

In the end, everything is a choice.

Namaste,

Olly
